The Daily Advertiser has teamed up with the Riverina Regional Library to bring you five new reading options each month.
From psychological thrillers to historical novels, librarian Amy Heap will recommend some of the best titles out there.

Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch
The Rivers of London series has been described as what would happen if Harry Potter grew up and joined the police and I think that is a fair assessment. It’s an urban fantasy series, and each book has a magical crime to be solved by the magical department of the London police.
There’s a great sense of place, lots of engaging characters, intriguing mysteries and plenty of irreverent humour. The books are reasonably short, and a great deal of fun.
Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak
Bridge of Clay is the story of five brothers, grieving for their mother and finding a way to keep going. It isn’t told in a linear fashion, and there are many elements with a very slow reveal. It’s about the destructive power of loss, and also about love; how brothers love each other, parental love, romantic love.
Not as broadly recommendable as The Book Thief, it’s a much slower, sometimes a little vague or confusing, but deeply emotional book. Not an easy read, but a rewarding one.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
This was an engrossing read, where children were stolen under the guise of a legitimate orphanage to be sold. What those kids had to endure was heart-wrenching, both the conditions of the orphanage and the emotional toil of thinking they were abandoned, but for them to have the strength to survive and thrive.
The events of this story are based on fact. This story will stay with me for a long time.

The Stranger by Kate Riordan
Three women are sent to Penhallow during the war with the Land Army, each with pasts full of secrets. A woman is found dead on the beach. We are then taken back in time, to six weeks before and find out what has happened and who the dead woman is.
I was easily sucked into the story and the lives of those at Penhallow, and all too soon the story was finished - a good weekend read.
