Thompson made 119 to steer the Cats to 272 and be in a dominant position against St Michaels at McPherson Oval.
Only Dave Bolton, twice, has brought up three figures so far this season.
However Thompson’s is the biggest score so far.
It came of just 137 balls and featured 10 fours and four sixes.
Jon Nicoll was thrilled with Thompson’s performance.
“He was magic,” Nicoll said.
“He’s been threatening for a little while now and has been in great nick.
“Looking at his scores this year his last four or five digs have been outstanding and yesterday he was all able to come together.
“He was brilliant.”
Wagga City were in trouble at 5-78, before Thompson and Cane Graetz (49) combined for a crucial 133-run partnership.
It certainly changed the match.
Graetz was bowled by Ryan Forsyth one run short of his milestone.
Nicoll was disappointed he missed out.
“Graetzy was brilliant as well making 49,” he said.
“It would have been great to see him make 50 but those two really got us out of a hole.
“Then the tail really wagged.
“I thought Robbie (Nicoll with 26) batted quite well, Scott (Nicoll) made a dozen and ‘Cracker’ (Craig Acton) made 20 as well.
“We were then able to knock over their top order which is a big bonus.”
After being bowled out in the 68th over, the Cats finished the day well on top.
St Michaels will resume at 4-17 with key batsmen Beck Frostick (5) and Brendan Gale (0) already sent back to the sheds.
Saints had to play out nine overs before stumps and there Wagga City really were able to get on top.
“Those little periods before stumps if you can get one wicket is a bonus but to pick up four is really good,” Nicoll said.
“I puts us in a good position for next week.”
Nicoll and Dean Crane both picked up two wickets.
An outright win, which would virtually seal the minor premiership, could be on the cards.
However it is far from a focus for Nicoll.
“I think we’ll worry about first innings first,” he said.
“It is pretty flat and it is hard enough taking 10 let alone taking anymore.”
Ryan Forsyth will be the big wicket when play resumes.
The Saints captain is yet to get off the mark and neither has Nick Fahey at the other end.
