Keough was the senior boys age champion after winning every event in the division in record time.
He set new marks in the 100m freestyle, the 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events, the individual medley (by 12 seconds) and was part of the winning relay team.
Labara, 9, mirrored the effort to be junior boys champion, setting new records in all events in his age group, including taking a stunning 50 seconds off the medley record. The year three student was also second in the open-age 100m freestyle.
Waratah was the winning house, ahead of Wattle and Banksia.
Carnival coordinator Duncan Brodie said the efforts of Keough, who only came to the school last year, and Labara were outstanding highlights on a successful day.
But the school also focussed on ensuring participation and enjoyment was the key, including for those students for whom swimming isn’t a strength.
“A lot of our beginning swimmers got to enjoy a lot of time in the pool, with across the pool events and teachers getting in and doing some real hands-on stuff with the kids,” Brodie said.
The overcast conditions ensured a successful carnival.
“It was brilliant because we didn’t have the heat. And we mixed it up this year with the 100m freestyle and medleys on early to allow more time for some games and time in the pool for kids during the day.”
