Ably led by Andrew Baggio and Rhiannon Podmore, the Sharks charged into the night’s first clash against the Dragons and out-enthused their rivals for a hard-fought 5-4 win.
Unsurprisingly, it was Baggio was scored the first ever mixed premier league touchdown.
The veteran playmaker linked with co-captain Podmore from dummy half to scoot over in the 5th minute, handing the Sharks an early 1-0 lead.
Jack Schein bagged the Sharks’ second on the 10-minute mark with a scampering run into the top left corner but it wasn’t long before Kassidy Argus notched the Dragons’ opening touchdown to bring the scoreline to 2-1.
Brayden Winnel put the Sharks further ahead just before half time and looked to have poached another score in the 24th minute.
However, the Dragons’ defence held out and a second half double to Rogan Price suddenly put the pressure back on the Sharks.
Dragons co-captain Nicole Absolum also found the chalk but further tries to Winnel and Schein ensured the Sharks would emerge victors from the first ever mixed premier league clash.
In the later fixture, Tigers co-captains Sophie Quirk and Chris Dowell steered their side to an entertaining 7-5 win over the Storm.
Brocke Argus was undeniably the star, crossing for five tries in the orange and black strip while Samarra Clark and Cleo Randal added to the Tigers’ tally with a touchdown apiece.
The Storm looked the more dangerous side early on with Joseph Cole dotting down in the 2nd minute before Argus squared things up with a well-timed intercept and dash to the chalk.
Nathan Murphy coughed up a golden Storm opportunity in the 5th minute and when Argus linked with Lucy Anderson for a smart dummy half touchdown three minutes later, it was the Tigers’ time to shine.
Tristan Wheeler set up Clark with a wide cut-out on the 10-minute mark to put them ahead 2-1 before Bronte Prestage and Argus traded points in the shadows of half time.
A tense period ensured as both sides looked to attack wide but neither could break through until the 30th minute when Argus set up Randal for his side’s fifth touchdown.
Two more tries to Argus negated Prestage’s second score and not even late touchdowns to Darren Reynoldson and Molly Antone could keep the Storm in the running.
