After two years with Canberra Demons in the North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL), Turner has decided to play with home club Temora this year.
He will remain in Canberra but travel back with the club’s ACT-based recruits on a weekly basis.
Temora president Peter Gerhard said Turner could not find the time required to re-commit to the higher level with the Demons.
“We’ve been keeping an eye on him, checking in with him just to see if he was interested in coming back,” Gerhard said.
“The Demons wanted a fair bit more commitment from him and he just couldn’t commit, having a job as well (as university).
“So he decided to come back and he will travel back with the (Canberra) boys.”
Turner made a big impression at Canberra Demons in his two seasons at the club.
He managed 28 NEAFL games over two years, kicking 28 goals and finding himself in the best on three occasions.
Turner spent time in defence and attack at Canberra and Gerhard said he will give Temora options.
“There is many options for him,” he said.
“He might play across half-forward somewhere, he can kick the ball a long way so it would be nice to have him kicking some long goals from half-forward. Either half-forward or half-back, he might be able to give us some drive from the backline.
“Either way, he gives us some options and it’s good to have him coming back from a higher level.”
Temora have been training for over a month in preparation for the upcoming season.
At this stage, key forward Matt Wallis remains uncommitted and plans to sit the season out. But Temora have Matt Harpley returning from injury and have picked up Ainslie key position player Max Richardson.
Jason Reid and Jeff Mannell have returned, while Will McMartin and Layne Smith have come across from the Northern Riverina League.
They have lost some players though with captain Charlie Vallance returning to Victoria, along with the departures of Anthony Atkin, Tim McAuley, Chase Grintell, Lachlan Leary, Abe Wooden. Mark Breust and Damien Ponting have also retired.
Meantime, AFL Riverina’s clearance window has reopened.
