Turvey started well, shutting out the Warriors in their first dig, despite a couple of misfields.
They capitalized in their first turn at bat, scoring three runs through smart base running from Amanda Gooden and a solid safe hit to centrefield by Belinda Dennis.
Both teams were shut out in their second innings, but in the top of the third, the Warriors tied the game up, scoring three runs. A rare dropped catch by Gooden allowed lead batter, Jess Swaysland on base she was advanced by a careless fielding attempt of a Montana Kearns bunt.
Layhnee Kearnes batted in Swaysland and Montana Kearnes scored thanks to brilliant base running after a Simone Jorgensen sacrifice fly. Layhnee Kearnes then scored after a passed ball to level the scores at 3-all.
Turvey’s third innings was a regulation “three up- three down”.
The top of the fourth brought about the first change in lead when, again, the Warriors brought in three runs.
An equally rare dropped catch by Turvey second-bagger, Sarah Carter, allowed Carmel Hutchinson on base. She was advanced to second by a Jayla Nix safe hit. A smart bunt to Kristy Tenison advanced both of these runners, but only Nix scored as Hutchinson was out on a forced play.
Tenison then made it all the way, as did Montana Kearnes in an innings that doubled Turvey’s score.
Turvey kept their hopes high and did well to shut out the Warriors in their remaining three innings, but they couldn’t trouble the scoerer despite hits to Gooden, Julie-Ann Hallam and Sarah Carter, leaving the Warriors with a 6-3 win..
Saints will tackle the Warriors in next Saturday’s game, whilst Turvey Park will enjoy the bye.
Meanwhile, the annual Katrina Powell Shield competition will commence at French Fields on Monday with five schools involved.
In the two opening matches, Kooringal High, the reigning champions, will play Mater Dei College in a replay of last season’s grand final.
Kooringal have lost several important players who’ve graduated and may have to rely on Year Seven student, Alex Maiden to do the pitching for them.
To the fore for Mater Dei should be a Turvey Park quartet of Paris Hall, Jess Wendt, Charli Hall and Phoebe Wadley.
In Monday’s other game, Wagga High will meet TRAC.
Wagga High has a young squad, but despite their youth are more experienced than the College players.
In Tuesday’s games, Kooringal High will meet TRAC and Mt Austin will play Mater Dei.
