Held over three days, 173 cars travelled from as far as Brisbane QLD and Phillip Island, VIC to be at Wagga’s caravan park this past weekend.
A particular feat for drivers who endured a round trip of more than 2000km with little of the modern comforts of newer vehicles.
“You’d be lucky if 10 of these cars has air conditioning,” said event organiser and Wagga local Howard Brown.
“That’s just how it was back in the day, there was no air conditioning.”
At a rough estimate, up to 70 per cent of the 241 registered guests came from outside Wagga.
Although not a car show, on Saturday night, the attendees did open the caravan grounds for members of the public to come through.
Up to 2000 guests came through to see the cars and were encouraged to give a gold coin donation towards the Wagga CanAssist branch.
“It was overwhelming, we only asked for gold coins but there were so many notes in there, you wouldn’t believe it,” said Mr Brown.
The event has been five years in the making for Mr Brown, who himself has faced a regular long cross-country to attend similar meetings in other states.
“I mainly wanted to bring people to Wagga, it’s sort of my own private party of people I’ve met with old school cars,” Mr Brown said.
“Every time I go somewhere with my two cars, people ask ‘Where are you from’, I say ‘Wagga’, and they say ‘Oh, where’s that?’ so I wanted to bring them here.”
The car owners spent Saturday doing a 69km sightseeing circuit through the city, before heading out to do the same in Junee on Sunday.
“It was getting up to 38-degrees which is too hot for old cars, so we cruised through to Junee,” said Mr Brown.
After the heralded success of this year’s, Mr Brown is already beginning plans to make it a regular event.
“It’s locked in for next year, but opening it to the public was just a once-off,” he said.
“Always on the first weekend of February, that way it's easy to remember. It’s not a car show, it’s not a show’n’shine, it’s just a catch up for people who like old school cars.”
