At a media conference today, The Nationals’ Mackenna Powell said “I can confirm we will be building the Tumut Hospital in 2019”.
“The hospital is on track to be delivered at the end of this year,” Ms Powell said.
“On Wednesday, it was reported that the hospital was years away – this is not correct.
“It’s so important that the people of our electorate receive the correct information.”
It comes as residents of Tumut and surrounds push for confirmation about dates.
Asked about a timeframe, Ms Powell was not able to specify, saying that construction will begin following consultation “to ensure that we deliver a hospital that meets everyone’s needs”.
“We’re currently undergoing consultation with medical staff and that’d be followed by community consultation,” she said.
“Then we’ll be moving forward to the build.”
Wagga MP Joe McGirr has criticised the lack of planning details surrounding the timeline of the hospital construction.
“It [timeline] gives the community the reassurance that this is going ahead,” Dr McGirr said.
“We know that the clinical services plan was prepared for 2017.
“There was an announcement for funding for building planning in 2017.
“So why is it so hard to get a timeline on the construction?”
“It’s a major concern for them [community members]...the hospital is past its used by date.
“This isn’t a gift, this is actually a basic right for the community.”
