Donna O’Grady is a kindergarten teacher at Turvey Park Public School and currently has four children that have parents she also taught.
“Teaching was something I always wanted to do and I have loved it ever since,” she said.
“It’s nice to have prior students’ children because you can keep in contact with the family and it’s lovely to see where they have gone.”
Ms O’Grady said there is no doubt the similarities will often shine through.
“I’ll tell the parents ‘I have seen that behaviour before’,” she said.
“Things have changed a lot in the curriculum and in the expectation for students.
“Kinder used to be a preschool mode where they learn to play and settle, but now we go straight into learning.”
Ms O’Grady said technology has made huge impacts in her classroom which has changed in four decades.
“It’s important to keep up with the changes,” she said.
Alarna McBeath said she was so pleased to know her daughter would have the same kindergarten teacher she had 20 years ago.
“Piper was so excited when she realised she had the same teacher as me,” she said.
“I was a sooky kid, but Ms O’Grady’s classroom was calm and made me feel safe.”
Ms McBeath said it can be worrying when you have to leave your child for the first time at school, but she knows Piper is safe and cared for.
