Riverina Police District Inspector Adrian Telfer said just after 7am, emergency services were called to a address in Mumford Street.
“That was in response to a house that was well engulfed by flames,” he said.
“That took about two hours to bring under control and unfortunately that house was completely destroyed.
“We have held that crime scene over night and now crime scene examiners are examining that this morning.”
Inspector Telfer said they are “fairly satisfied that this was deliberately lit”, but could not confirm what caused the large hole in the roof.
“We are speaking to a number of witnesses,” he said.
“There has been a bit of activity in this area over the last 14 days.
“There were a few people seen in the vicinity shortly before the fire.”
Inspector Telfer said police are examining all angles to determine who was responsible.
“We are aware there a number of issues in that street at the moment and any more than one incident at the same house in one week is concerning,” he said.
Inspector Telfer said they believed the occupants had moved out on Monday.
“This is very dangerous fire to deliberately light a fire especially in a house,” he said.
Inspector Telfer said police are up and down that street every day.
