Jester Angel showed plenty of fighting spirit to claim the Sims Metal Management Wagga Scamper (1000m), one of the features of Murrumbidgee Turf Club’s Australia Day public holiday race meeting.
Jester Angel was a winner at her first start for Maclean at Corowa last month and continued her perfect start with another impressive win at Wagga.
In-form jockey Blaike McDougall took her straight to the front and she dug deep to score by a long neck, after being headed early in the straight.
Maclean will now head to Sydney with his in-form mare.
“There’s a 1100 metre fillies and mares benchmark 70 at Warwick Farm in 16 days time,” Maclean said.
“It will be my first time up to Sydney but it looks like a good race for her.
“She went to Corowa and won so we thought if she wins here she deserves a crack at it.”
Formerly trained by Wez Hunter and Mark Riley, Jester Angel is a winner in town.
Wodonga’s Connor Barton was a part-owner in the mare and sent her to Maclean to train after purchasing her outright.
Maclean, who has four horses in work at Wodonga, was happy to take her on board.
“Connor also got me Ruark, so we’ve done pretty well with the last two,” he said.
“I’m not surprised at all about what she’s done. She’s gone up against quality opposition in Melbourne.
“We had a bit of a setback after her win at Corowa with a bruised heel but we got it right and got her here.”
Jester Angel recorded a time of 57.59 seconds, on a soft five track. Up Trumpz ($6.00) grabbed second, ahead of the durable Benno’s Boy ($15.00) in third.
