The city’s finest golfers will battle it out on Saturday and Sunday in the 36-hole stroke event, before the Australia Day Public Holiday 4BBB Medley takes centre stage on Monday.
More than $10,000 in prizes and trophies are up for grabs over the three days and that has resulted in the region’s best players taking part.
Reigning champion Brian Harris will return to defend his City of Wagga Open crown, while young gun Bart Carroll, Luke Chisholm, Jarrod Meacham, Henry Brind, Kyle Tuckett and Max Jennings are just some of the challengers.
Wagga Country Club secretary-manager John Turner said an action-packed three days of golf is expected.
“Over 400 players are down for the three days,” Turner said.
“The championship course is in play for this year’s event after the fourth and fifth greens were reconstructed last year.
“It’s good to see some visitors in town to give the local hopes some competition including players from Canberra, Melbourne Forbes, Moe and Howlong.”
One of the features of the City of Wagga Open will be a $5000 hole-in-one prize on the 18th hole.
It can be won multiple times over the weekend.
“With $10,000 in prizes and trophies, and then $5000 for a hole-in-one on the 18th, it’s pretty handy,” Turner said.
“It should be a good weekend of golf.”
Last year’s City of Wagga Open proved a thriller, with Harris getting the better of Bart Carroll in a play-off.
Carroll and fellow talented junior Max Jennings, are both playing off plus one handicaps and loom as players to watch over the weekend.
A seeded draw will be used on Sunday, with the leaders to tee off at 12.30pm.
Play on Monday for the 4BBB Medley is 8.30am for a 9am shotgun start. A barbeque will be held afterwards.
