The Daily Advertiser has teamed up with the Riverina Regional Library to bring you five new reading options each month.
From psychological thrillers to historical novels, librarian Amy Heap will recommend some of the best titles out there.
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.
Celestial and Roy are newly married professionals on their way towards a bright future when Roy is convicted of a crime he did not commit.
This is not a heroes vs. villains tale with a tidy resolution. It is a complicated, messy, moving, and thought-provoking story about love, family, racism, and the wide-reaching effects of being jailed in America.
For fans of Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, and The Mothers by Brit Bennett
Educated by Tara Westover
Educated is the memoir of a woman brought up in a family that was isolated by their strong religious beliefs, and fear of intervention, which led to them avoiding doctors and school.
Living in rural Idaho, there was so much dirt, danger, and ignorance, as well as emotional and physical abuse, as to make this a most uncomfortable read.
Eventually, thanks to a thirst for knowledge and understanding, Tara is able to leave and be freed from abuse. Though not always a pleasant read, it is a moving account of the hardships of ignorance and poverty, and the power of education.
For fans of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Wall, and The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.
Bow Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton
A coming of age story, set in Brisbane in the 1980s, where drugs and violence run rampant. It’s gritty, moving, and darkly humorous. For fans of The Feel Good Hit of the Year by Liam Pieper.
The Rook and Stiletto by Daniel O’Malley
These books, the first two in a series, are so much fun. In The Rook, Myfanwy Thomas wakes up in a London park, surrounded by corpses in latex gloves, holding a letter. She doesn't know who she is, but she is about to find out that she works for a secret, government agency that deals with supernatural threats, via supernatural means.
In Stiletto, we follow two new characters through supernatural and scientific shenanigans, always with humour and imaginative detail.
The London setting, the wild and wonderful powers, the tough women and the humour make these such a fun read. For fans of fun sci-fi and urban fantasy books like the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch, or Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.
Join a book club
There is a book club service called the Riverina Regional Library Book Club, where library members can get together with friends once a month to have tea, coffee and cake, or wine, beer and cheese and great discussion about books.
Clubs are registering now to start meeting in February. There is a maximum of ten members a group.
A group membership is $400 per year (divided among members) which includes 10 titles to take home and read.
All books mentioned above are available to borrow from the Riverina Regional Library. There are 18 branches across the region, which means if your local library doesn’t have the book it can be sourced for you.
For anyone struggling to decide what to read, the Riverina Regional Library can also develop a personalised list for you. Check out how to get one here.
