Firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service were on scene last night where the fire was visible from surrounding areas, such as the Olympic Highway. 

A spokesperson from The Rock RFS said at this stage the “fire is out” and RFS crews will assess the area again this morning, along with members from the National Parks and Wildlife. 

“The assessment will make sure that the fire is completely blacked out,” the spokesperson said. 

Scott Mooney was a firefighter on ground last night and said the fire spread to about four hectares of ground at the top of the ridge at The Rock hill. 

“The fire was brought under control last night at probably about midnight,” Mr Mooney said. 

Mr Mooney said he is not sure on exact details but said wildlife are likely to have been affected by the fire. 

“We had lots of firefighters, about 30, battling the fire,” he said. 

Uranquinty Fire Brigade were also assisting the local fire service crews and said on a Facebook post that the fire on The Rock Hill has caused “difficult access”, making it a “horrible job” for all involved. 

After about a week battling fires in the Snowy Valley, two more blazes have started in Tumut overnight. 

The valley will be kept at a high fire danger reading as the forecast is expected to heat up later in the week. 

NSW RFS are urging residents and visitors to the area to stay informed, by listening to the local radio station ‘Sounds of the Mountain’ on 96.3 FM and ring the Bush fire Information Line on 1800 679 737.
