On Monday, January 21, police from the Riverina Police District were called about 1pm to Oura Beach, about 20 kilometres east of Wagga, after a 20-year-old Junee man was seen to disappear underwater and not resurface.
A search was conducted by local police, including assistance from PolAir, police divers and the NSW State Emergency Service.
The search widened to a few kilometres downstream to the Oura Beach Reserve, and both banks were scoured.
The man’s body was located in the river about 3km downstream just after 7pm on Tuesday.
Riverina Police District Inspector Adrian Telfer is reminding the community to make safety a priority when in, or around, the water.
“This incident is a tragic reminder of the power of the water environment,” Inspector Telfer said.
“The appearance of many waterways can be deceiving, whether it is depth, current, temperature or submerged objects, so it’s important to check your surroundings before you get in.”
