Riverina Police District Superintendent Bob Noble said about 2am on Sunday morning police were called to an address at Mumford Ave, Ashmont.
“There was a report of several males having tried to force entry to that dwelling,” he said.
“On hearing them, a person confronted those males through the door.
“There were a number of males in the front yard of the premises and it appears that one of those suspects has discharged what appears to be a shotgun into the doorway of the dwelling.”
Superintendent Noble said there was some damage to the doorway and the door.
“A number of shotgun pellets did strike the occupant of the house and he received treatment from an ambulance and is now assisting police with their inquiries,” he said.

Superintendent Noble said it is unclear what sparked the incident, but they are working with the occupants.
“It is clearly a cause for alarm for police and community,” he said.
“It is unbelievably dangerous discharging a firearm in a public street and it’s very lucky no one was seriously injured.”
Superintendent Noble said they are not commenting on whether there could be links between this and recent crimes in the area.
“There has been a bit of a spike in crime, particularly violent crime, and can assure the public that police are working hard to keep that down,” he said.
“We have made a number of arrests in the last few days and we expect a few more this week.
Superintendent Noble said anyone who knows anything is urged to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or Wagga Police Station.
