Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Spliet said a proactive police enforcement conducted an operation in relation to shoplifiting at South City and Central Wagga.
“There were 26 people in two days detected for relevant shoplifting offences,” he said. “There was also a male who had been wanted by police who was located in the CBD for a stolen vehicle offence and some bail related matters.
“There was another male who had been listed as wanted for some time and he was arrested as well for breach of bail.”
Inspector Spliet said in total 30 people were searched.
“We have actually had a decline in the reports of shoplifting,” he said. “We will be out there being proactive. People were detected stealing food … various types of property.”
Inspector Spliet said the results served as a warning to anyone who was considering committing an offence. The shoplifting operation wasn’t the only crime police targeted.

A man has been charged as part of investigations into drug supply in the state’s south. Inspector Spliet said in July 2018, officers attached to Wagga Region Enforcement Squad established Strike Force Cretney to investigate drug supply in the Wagga and Young areas.
Following inquiries, police conducted a vehicle stop on MacLeay Street, Turvey Park, and arrested a 26-year-old man about 9.50am on Wednesday, before he was taken to the local police station.
Inspector Spliet said a short time later, police executed a search warrant at a home on Mimosa Drive, Mount Austin.
During the search, officers seized an amount of ammunition, and items believed to be stolen including a chainsaw, credit cards and identification documents.
The 26-year-old was charged with drug supply offences and refused bail to appear at Wagga Local Court on Thursday.
Inspector Spliet said over the coming days more arrests could be made.
“In this case, with this person, there was a connection between both of those towns and the investigation secured shows there’s been some ongoing supply offences in those regions,” he said.
“We will be alleging he was an up-line supplier.”
Investigations under Strike Force Cretney are continuing.
