Wagga Swim Club’s Ukrainian mastermind has been drilling his squad over the summer in preparation for the upcoming carnival season, which includes the NSW Country Regional Carnival at Oasis Aquatic Centre.
Labara’s pre-season included the highly anticipated squad training camp – affectionately dubbed “Camp G” – which saw the team put through their paces over a gruelling week.
“We took the squad up to Thredbo with a few parents and it was really good, lots of training,” Labara said.
“As well as swimming, we did lots of uphill training and walking, wall climbing and that sort of thing.
“It’s a new program – combination of dry land training and swimming too.”
Labara said there had been a particular focus on improving technique ahead of the carnivals.
“We used video as well to show technique and see if we can improve our skills,” he said.
With just over a week to go until Wagga hosts the NSW Country Regionals over the Australia Day weekend, Wagga Swim Club vice president Wayne Murphy was pleased to report high registration numbers.
Murphy said 286 competitors from across Wagga, Albury, Canberra Cootamundra, Deniliquin, Dubbo, Goulburn, Grenfell, Griffith, Junee, Katoomba, Kiama, Kinross, Lake Cargelligo, Nyngan, Parkes, Springwood Swim Club, Temora, Trinity Grammar, Tumbarumba and Tumut had signed up.
