At 3.30pm, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded the temperature in Wagga at 45.2 degrees, just passing the previous record for a January day of 44.8.
The city set that record on January 23, 2001.
The record-breaker has come as the city swelters through a string of hot days.
Monday’s peak was 42 degrees, with Tuesday passing that with a top of 43.9.
Both of those maximums were eclipsed by the maximum of 44.3 on Wednesday.
Health authorities have been urging people to take care in the heat, with police issuing a reminder about the dangers of leaving people, particularly children, in hot cars.
There is likely to be little relief from the heat in coming days, with a still-scorching 44 degrees predicted for Friday.
