General manager of Destination Riverina Murray, Richie Robinson, said a large portion of accommodation in the area is already booked out and people need to turn to alternative options.
“Regional towns and cities that regularly host major events such as the Elvis Festival in Parkes and the Country Music Festival in Tamworth are experts at activating short term accommodation solutions to complement traditional accommodation providers,” Mr Robinson said.
Mr Robinson said people in Wagga need to consider listing their homes on websites like Airbnb or Stayz.
“There are many ways that local residents can support major events in their area, including making their property available through short-term letting platforms,” Mr Robinson said.
With Wagga recently named as a top trending destination in Australia and New Zealand by Airbnb, there is evidence to suggest people are already getting on board.
If managed appropriately, Mr Robinson said the city’s economy will benefit as a result.
“We believe that alternative accommodation options are essential at easing pressure on locations during times of peak demand and allow a location to capitalise on the economic benefit gained from hosting major events.”
Wagga City Council is on board with the movement, and Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator, Fiona Hamilton, said she is confident the community will be supportive.
“Wagga Wagga has a growing reputation as a hub for major events that fill the city’s accommodation, restaurants and other businesses with overnight visitors,” she said.
“Major events are a multi-million dollar economic benefit to our city and residents can play an important role ensuring visitors have an exceptional experience while staying in Wagga Wagga.”
