Shannon, 45, has been a long-time servant of Wagga Touch Association as both a player and referee but went above and beyond last month, representing both NSW and Australia in the National Deaf Touch Championships and subsequent international against New Zealand.

Shannon, who also has strong ties with Coolamon Touch Association, earned his second gold medal with the NSW men after defeating Queensland 6-2 in their final match.

NSW also defeated Combined States and NZ Aces during the Gold Coast tournament across January 4-5.

Shannon’s form was good enough to earn him a call-up to the national side, who played against New Zealand the following day.

Making his Australian debut, Shannon featured heavily in Australia’s 13-8 win over their Trans Tasman rivals to cap off a memorable tournament.

Writing to The Daily Advertiser, Shannon said it was a “special” occasion for him as a player, that it was a “great” series of games and that he “enjoyed” the experience.

Shannon’s next opportunity to represent his state and country will be at the National Deaf Touch Championships in Melbourne in 2020. 

Until then, he’s set to have his hands full with refereeing as Wagga Touch Association looks to cement its new-look mixed competition.

The sport’s governing body will meet this week to determine final numbers, teams and sponsorship.
