Riverina Police District’s crime manager Phil Malligan said about 4am on Wednesday, two men forced their way into the service station on the Sturt Highway.

“They were brandishing a hammer and a knife and have threatened the attendant in the service station before leaving with a sum of cash and some other items from the store,” he said.

“From what we believe has taken place, the two individuals were wearing hoodies and face coverings and they were armed.

“The attendant has handed over an amount of cash before the two left in a small white sedan.”

Only 24 hours earlier, a taxi driver was left “traumatised” after being robbed at gunpoint in Wagga early on Tuesday morning and police have not ruled out links between the two incidents. 

“That is certainly something that will form part of the investigation and detectives will be looking at,” Acting Detective Inspector Malligan said. 

“It’s terrifying that any incidents like this are taking place and two incidents of this kind back-to-back is certainly of concern to police and to the community of Wagga. 

“I can assure the community of Wagga ... there is a large amount of police on the street in Wagga each evening.” 

Inspector Malligan said there is a limited description of what the individuals look like, but the vehicle is believed to be a Nissan Pulsar. 

“The victim is certainly shaken up, he is a young man and we have been speaking with him most of the morning,” he said.
