Newcastle were bowled out for 143 with Riverina chasing down the total in the 35th over.
Riverina looked in early trouble with Newcastle openers putting on 77 before the Riverina bowling attack ran through their batting order.
James Roche was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets.
Wagga’s Luke Fellows finished unbeaten on 49 with Josh Mills at the other end on 18 after making 79 to start the tournament.
They now have two Twenty20 matches on Wednesday up against Central Coast and Central Northern.
However Riverina couldn’t back up an opening win in the Kookaburra Cup after a final-over loss to Central Coast.

Wagga’s Jake Scott took three wickets, but the visitors just got past Riverina’s 7-162.
