The Team of the Year defender looked unlikely to feature in 2019 after a suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury during the off-season.
Weir took a tumble back in November and early prognosis dictated a lengthy spell on the sidelines, however, the centre back says he’s been making good headway in rehabilitation.
“It’s pretty positive signs so far,” Weir said.
“I reckon I was 80 per cent not likely to play at all in the coming season but it’s been going really well.”
The 30-year-old is already off crutches and commenced light training before the New Year but he’s still taking pains to keep the knee under wraps.
“I’m back to walking which is good and I’ve tried a bit of running too, just straight line jogs and that kind of thing,” Weir said.
“I might need a bit more work but I’ll definitely be down at the physio and that kind of thing.
“It’s really just about trying to build up strength in the knee and get back some of that stability.”
His absence will be sorely missed in a side that could potentially lose off-season recruit Jake Ploenges to Wagga City Wanderers in the wake of the dual registration ruling.
However, Weir is confident his club will have the cattle to rattle some cages in the coming months.
“We’re not really sure what Jake’s up to with us and Wanderers … but we’ve got some good young players around and Tyler (Allen) is looking like he’ll stick around here.”
“Tyler’s a terrific player and he can slot in at centre back when I’m not around, plus we’ve got a good crop coming up from second and third grade we can look at too.
“I know (coach) Travis (Weir) is keen to use those young fellas.”
Weir said United would commence pre-season training on January 20.
