Emergency services rushed to the Burley Griffin Way near Bakers Road, about five kilometres east of the town, around 6.30pm.
When they arrived, they discovered a Holden Commodore off the road, where it had collided with a tree before being engulfed in flames.
The driver died at the scene, police said, while a male passenger was pulled from the wreckage.
“Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he died at the scene,” police said in a statement on Sunday night.
“Officers from Riverina Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.”
Emergency services and council crews were on scene during the night as investigations got under way.
NSW Roads and Maritime Service’s transport management centre advised the road would be closed for some time as police conduct their investigations into the crash.
It reopened around 1am on Monday.
Travellers were urged to avoid the area and use diversions, which are suitable for all vehicles including B-doubles.
The diversions meant drivers had to all an hour in extra travel time following the diversions in place.
Motorists travelling east between Temora and Wallendbeen were directed left off Burley Griffin Way into Waratah Street and then use Milvale Road and Boorowa Street to get to Young, and then Olympic Highway to Wallendbeen.
Westbound motorists at Wallendbeen were sent right onto the Olympic Highway and head to Young before using Boorowa Street, Milvale Road and Waratah Street to get to Temora.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or visiting the online reporting page.
