Former Wagga cyclist Cameron Scott’s charmed 2018 has stretched into the new year with a podium finish at the 2019 Road National Championships in Ballarat.
Heading into Friday’s under 23 men’s criterium as the defending champion, Scott couldn’t quite emulate his gold medal efforts in last year’s race but still manged to clinch bronze in a frantic bunch sprint.
It was nevertheless a memorable birthday present for the world champion cyclist, who turned 21 during the Road Nats and rounded out the championships with a fourth-placed finish in the under 23 men’s road race.
Wagga’s other riders, however, didn’t find as much success.
Tolland Cycle Club rising star Myles Stewart rode strongly for ninth in the criterium before failed to finish the road race while fellow under 23 men’s competitors, Chris Powell and Lachlan Scott, finished 19th and 44th respectively.
Wagga young gun Zac Barnhill failed to complete either of the under 19 men’s criterium and road race.
