On Saturday, the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Friends and family from near and afar gathered at the Wagga Rules Club to mark the occasion.
“Our greatest achievements are having four healthy kids and they’ve all done quite well,” Mr Rumens, 84, said.
“While couples need to develop interests together, they still need their own as well.
“Know thyself and all things in moderation.”
Similarly, Mrs Rumens, 85, said their successful time together was because “we have what we call robust discussions”.
“We’re just really enjoying our family today and friends from all over the place, including New Zealand,” she said.
The pair, who have lived in Wagga for the past 32 years, were educators during their working lives.
Mr Rumens was in the vocational and tertiary sector while Mrs Rumens in the primary sector.
They have four daughters, all of whom travelled in from Narrandera, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide for the occasion.
One of them is Libby Williams, who said her parents were “just a very generous couple”.
“They care about people and are very interested in all of the children and what they do,” Mrs Williams said.
“They’re very community minded and they’re very involved in their church.
“As well, they have a very good intellectual connection with each other.”
Mr and Mrs Rumens said they will continue to enjoy living a modest life.
