About 12.30am today, emergency services were called to a house in Phillip Avenue, Mount Austin after reports of a fight between two men.
Wagga Police were told that a 42-year-old man tried to force entry before being confronted by the occupants.
“We believe the assault took place within that house and it spilled onto the street,” Wagga Police Inspector Adrian Telfer said.
The male occupant involved in the assault was a 52-year-old, who was subsequently airlifted to Canberra after being found unconscious at the scene.
He remains in a critical condition.
The 42-year-old also sustained head injuries and was taken to Wagga Base Hospital where he remains under police guard.
“We certainly don't believe this was a random attack but our detectives are still speaking with a few people,” Inspector Telfer said.
“We’ll be endeavouring to bring the 42-year-old back to the station to assist us further.”
Two women, aged 46 and 26, were also inside the home at the time.
The 46-year-old sustained minor injuries to her face from the incident.
Police established a crime scene and continue to investigate.
Anyone with more information is urged to contact Wagga Police Station on 6922 2599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
