The 16-year-old Wagga cyclist will compete in the Road National Championships across Friday and Saturday in Bathurst, putting him squarely among the country’s top cycling ranks.
Barnhill, who is listed in the under 19s category, has set himself a modest goal but is nevertheless eager to get underway.
“I really just want to finish the road race, you know,” Barnhill said.
“I’m riding in the criterium on Friday but Saturday’s the road race – it’s 105km and I’m keen just to get through it.”

The youngster will take boatloads of confidence into the race having punched above his weight at the Tour of Bright last month.
Riding against older cyclists isn’t exactly a new scenario for Barnhill but he’s looking forwards to testing himself in Bathurst.
“The Tour of Bright over three days was pretty good and I’m used to riding with the bigger guys now, so that’ll be ok … but this will definitely be the biggest race I’ve ever been in.”
He’s not the only Wagga rider in the mix with Cameron Scott, Chris Powell, Lachlan Scott and Myles Stewart all competing in the under 23s Road Nats.
“There’s a couple of those guys in my new senior team, so hopefully I can help them out wherever I can,” Barnhill said.
