The Wagga girls will both go to school in Canberra, after being accepted into the sports academy development program at Harrison School.
They’re in the first intake of national level athletes in a program which aims to help talented prospects balance their school and sport commitments as well as offering strength and conditioning, skills training and theory.
The sisters will both travel to Adelaide in April for nationals after strong performances at the recent NSW state age swimming championships at Sydney Olympic Park.
Meg made the finals of every event in the 15 years age group and claimed bronze in the 100m backstroke. She’ll head to nationals with six qualifying times.
Abbey, in the 12-13 years division, swam qualifying times and personal bests in the 200m backstroke and the 400m freestyle. She has qualified for four events and hopes to add more over the summer.
The pair train with the Ginninderra club in Canberra under coach Jim Fowlie.
Meg was also at school in Canberra last year but Abbey finished primary school at South Wagga while travelling to Canberra to train with her older sister.
However, they still proudly call Wagga home and will continue to travel back on weekends to reunite with the rest of the family.
