Treasurer and foster carer of Best Friends Pet Rescue Dimi Crebbin said the end of the year is their busiest time.
“We had over 50 dogs needing rescuing and to be re-homed just in December alone,” Ms Crebbin said.
“People think these animals make great Christmas presents until they realise they have to fork out for food, vet bills and all the rest so that’s when we see them getting dumped.”
Ms Crebbin, who has worked at the animal rescue organisation for six years, said the best thing people can do to help is to get their pets desexed.
“People don’t realise that cats can start breeding from as young as four months, and dogs as young as six,” she said.
Ms Crebbin said the organisation does the best they can with limited resources, but help from the public is particularly important at this time of year.
“What we really need is donations, and any time people can spare to help us out is so valuable,” she said.
“People forget how expensive it can be as a non-for-profit organisation.”
Wagga local Kym Bosley is getting ready to do her bit to help the animal rescue group.
“I’ve had bright pink hair for years now, and it’s time to go so I’m shaving it to raise money for the incredible team at Best Friends Pet Rescue,” Miss Bosley said.
“I just want these animals to have the best chance in life.”
Miss Bosley is hoping to raise $1000 by January 14 when she will be shaving her hair at Kooringal State School.
