The contract to build the six-storey ambulatory care building has been awarded to CPB Contractors, a company with previous experience in building hospitals.
The project is expected to take about two years. Preliminary work to clear the site has already been finished.
Chief executive of the Murrumbidgee Local Health District Jill Ludford said work on a $30 million multi-storey car park – which she dubbed “stage 3A” of the redevelopment – would begin immediately after work on the ambulatory care building was done.
“It’s really important to preserve the parking that’s currently available on site for our people and our visitors and patients, so the construction of the car park will commence in 2021, at the conclusion of the construction of stage three,” Ms Ludford said.
“The new building will accommodate expanded aged care, rehabilitation and older person’s mental health inpatient services; ambulatory, community and primary health care services; and education and training facilities.”
Although it is a stand-alone separate building, there will be two sky bridge-style links connecting the ambulatory care facility to the main hospital, which was opened its doors to patients in January 2016.
Work is also due to be completed in early 2019 on a revamp of a building in Berry Street which is going to house Wagga’s new BreastScreen NSW site.
Currrently BreastScreen is in the Calvary Hospital precinct, but health officials are hoping that moving it into central Wagga will encourage more women to visit.
