Shane Warne labelled Handscomb a "lamb to the slaughter" after he was trapped lbw by Ishant Sharma for 13 in the second Test against India in Perth.

Australia's No.5 has long faced questions over his front-foot issues and that poor dismissal - pinned deep in his crease by a full-pitched delivery - will only invite further scrutiny of his unorthodox technique.

Dropped after two Tests during last summer's Ashes series, when he was targeted by England pacemen Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, Handscomb sought out former opener Chris Rogers to help him make minor adjustments.

But scores of 34, 14, seven and 13 this series are certain to leave him vulnerable with allrounder Mitch Marsh's pace bowling set to bring him into calculations when the squad is named for Melbourne and Sydney after the Perth Test.

"Pete came into the series very strong-minded about the way he wants to play his game," Hick told SEN radio on Monday.

"We discussed various options in the past which he tried - whether he tried them long enough and didn't feel comfortable, I don't know.

"We'll have a chat with him today now the dust is settled and just see what he wants to do going forward.

"Knowing Pete, there's a good chance he'll back himself and the way he plays."

Handscomb averaged 63 in his first seven Tests, a period in which he compiled five scores higher than 50.

In eight Tests since, he has averaged just 23 and only surpassed 50 once.

"Without doubt he's missing a few balls on the front foot and when the bowler's able to bowl full to any batsman and you're not reversing the pressure on them, it certainly gives the bowler a little bit more leeway," Hick said.

"We've had those discussions ... we'll try and see if there's a breakdown between what's happening in Shield cricket and what's happening out here."
