Over the past two weeks, firefighters across the region have attended five house fires.
The sudden increase has prompted a reminder from Turvey Park station manager Chad Kennis.
“We’re wanting to encourage people to be aware and make sure their houses are fireproof this Christmas,” said Mr Kennis.
“If you’ve got Christmas lights, make sure to turn them off overnight or when you’re going out.”
As the weather warms, and gatherings move outdoors, Mr Kennis is hopeful people will maintain safe practices.
“If you’re having an open fire or cooking on a barbecue, make sure you’ve got a responsible adult who is unaffected by alcohol manning it,” he said.
“Get your barbecue checked out before operating, check and clean your gas cylinder and your regulator.”
Turvey Park Fire Station will remain open throughout the holiday period, with residents encouraged to book a home safety check ahead of the busiest season.
“You can always give firies a call and we’ll set up a time to check your home and whether you’ve got a working smoke alarm. We’re open 24 hours, seven days a week even during Christmas,” said Mr Kennis.
