On Monday night the draft plan will go before councillors. If approved as is, or with only cosmetic changes, it will go on public display to allow feedback.
At an estimated cost of $65 million, it is – how do I say this politely – ambitious.
That’s not to knock it.
We need councils with vision and foresight and, most importantly, clear, costed and shovel-ready plans for when the Funding Fairy magically appears and opens her purse.
(Editor’s note: The Funding Fairy is an elusive creature with deep pockets who is known to populate marginal seats about four weeks out from an election.)
But it is an ambitious plan and with little more than $2 million, or 3 per cent, of it funded, don’t expect to see too many sods being turned on the big ticket items for a while yet.
However, in a week in which the ABS revealed that more two-thirds of Australians are overweight or obese, it is timely the council should release its plans to get people moving again here in Wagga.
We wish them luck in securing the funding to make this project happen.
All the best for the week ahead, Ross.
