Wagga High School’s dux Brad Li, 18, received a superb ATAR of 99.1 which places him in the top one per cent of the state.
“I feel absolutely fantastic right now, I’ve entered my dream course and my mum burst into tears and my dad said he was very proud of me,” Mr Li said.
Mr Li said achieving a top rank comes down to hard work and a balanced lifestyle.
“Too much study will burn you out and I think it’s all about consistency, I procrastinated a lot and probably achieved about four to five hours of good study every day,” he said.
Also over-the-moon is Angus McKelvie-Hill from The Riverina Anglican College who achieved a near perfect score of 98.75.
“I’m feeling pretty good, I was a little bit more relieved with yesterday’s result but still felt a bit nervous today because my university course’s cut-off ATAR is 98, so I’m relieved that I got into the course,” he said.
“The HSC isn’t impossible if you put in, it’s not a secret. You have to work hard, not only in the last few weeks of the HSC, but over the whole two years including Year 11.”
His father Isaac Hill said he’s “very proud” of his son’s result. “Angus worked very hard and he got a reward for his effort,” he said.
“HSC has been a learning curve for us, we’ve all had to make sure he has plenty of time to study, given him enough space and it’s been a whole year-long family adjustment.
“He’s naturally gifted, but also from the trials, to the HSC, Angus did approximately 10 hours a day.”
TRAC’s principal Paul Humble said it is great to see the students’ achievements throughout their journey.
“For me it’s great but for them it’s exceptional, for so many kids to have done so well, across the board, not just in the top end but all kids have improved consistently all the way through schooling,” Mr Humble said.
“This is just the end product of a lot of hard work over a lot of hard years.
“I couldn’t be prouder, of not just these kids but for all the kids that have come through.”
The average ATAR is about 70.00 and it is the rank used by universities to select school leavers for entry into university courses.
