Operations commander, Craig McIntyre said that the Bureau of Meteorology issued a Severe Thunderstorm warning today that encompassed most of the Southern Zone.

At approximately 2pm on Thursday, over 20 millimetres of rain fell in Wagga in a very short time which has caused flash flooding and property damage.

Mr McIntyre said that the road gutters in Wagga are full and are hazardous. Parents should please ensure that children do not play or enter flood waters.

Mr McIntyre urged drivers to avoid affected areas and remain aware of the current weather event.

The majority of the calls for assistance received by the NSW SES are for water entering premises and leaking roofs. The Wagga Unit is active and responding to the requests. 

Mr McIntyre said that as further rainfall is likely overnight that further impacts are expected and they ask that people requiring assistance be patient due to the high number of jobs that volunteers are currently responding to.

Thursday 3pm

Storms were forecasted for Wagga on Thursday and boy, did we get a storm. 

Nigel Smedley, from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Wagga office, said another line of storms is on its way. 

“The first storm is starting to die and move on,” he said. 

“North-west line of storms heading for Wagga now.” 

“Several thunderstorm warnings have been issued, with the last one at 2.38pm warning about severe storms across the eastern half of NSW with destructive winds, giant hails stones and heavy rainfall. Could possibly come to Wagga." 

Last night,  there was 11.2 millimetres of rain in Wagga and Kapooka had 22.6mm Mr Smedley said. 

“Today we have had 15 millimetres,” he said. 

The forecast tomorrow is partly cloudy with a medium chance of showers in the morning. 

“We expect the storm to clear tonight.”
