An abundance of food donated by library members through our annual Food for Fines amnesty, accepted until December 22, surrounds the library Christmas display.
Storytime is over for another year and the annual Summer Reading Club will launch on December 17.
The holidays are the perfect time to participate in a Summer Reading Club. It’s free, self-paced and there are great prizes on offer. Each time you borrow from the library, simply place your borrowing slip into one of the Summer Reading Club’s lucky draw chests for your chance to win a prize.
Summer Reading Club (SRC) packs for primary school-aged children will be available from the library on Monday, December 17. Each pack contains an activity booklet, ruler, pencil, key-ring, lollies and plenty of other fun stuff. This year’s theme is Curious Creatures.
There is a plethora of Australian and popular fiction whose narratives are also grounded in our country’s landscape, flora and fauna, such as classics, Snugglepot and Cuddle Pie, Blinky Bill, and The Silver Brumby.
SRC is a national initiative that allows children to develop a sense of community with other readers across the country as they discover great Australian authors and illustrators, and engage in literary and creative activities, both online and at home. Visit www.summerreadingclub.org.au/theclub/ to register and find many fun online activities, reading suggestions and competitions for all ages.
Reading Sux is our youth reading program. Vampire fiction has been making a resurgence recently, especially in the young adult genre. However, the folklore of the vampire dates back to the mid seventeen hundreds with the word ‘vampire’ first appearing in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1734. Since then, vampires have evolved from bloated corpse-like agents of Satan to characters with more human-like qualities that are not always the manifestation of evil.
For the grown-ups we have Relaxing Summer Reads. Booklets full of handpicked reading suggestions for both Reading Sux and Relaxing Summer Reads are available from the library.
For those who are having a stay-cation with the kids and are looking for things to do during the summer, the library is the perfect spot to chill out and relax for a few hours. For travellers, there are thousands of audio books to download or borrow to listen to on long car trips.
Across the school holidays you will find free board games, Xbox Kinect, craft activities, and of course hundreds of books in the children’s area of the library.
You can access the e-Library (rrl.nsw.gov.au/elibrary) 24/7 for books, music, audiobooks and films.
