The Warriors went into the contest as favourites but were made to work hard by the fast-starting Saints.
Fine pitching by Saints’ Tessa McGlynn and a left field catch by sister, Gemma, saw the Warriors shut out in their first innings.
In response, the Saints took to the Warriors pitcher, Carmel Hutchinson, in their first innings and with hits to Desi Calder and Tessa McGlynn, Kadison Hofert scored to give the Saints an early lead.
Both teams were shutout in their second innings and after the Warriors were shutout for a third time, the Saints increased their lead in the bottom of the third by adding another three runs.
It was an innings which saw safe hits to Desi Calder, Tessa McGlynn, Rochelle Harley, Paula Potts Seona Dwyer and Pam Calder.
Down 4-0, the Warriors power hitters decided it was time and in the top of the fourth they ‘came to the party’.
Hits to Kim Dennis, Simone Jorgensen, Hutchinson, Jayla Nix, Kristy Tenison and Jess Swaysland saw five runs added to the Warriors tally, and a one-run lead – their first time ahead for the match.
Saints ‘Rochelle Harley then crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth tying the game up at 5-all.
Warriors were again shut out in the top of the fifth before Saints hit the front in their fifth turn at bat which produced three runs.
Further hits to Rochelle Harley and Desi Calder, combined with some untidy fielding from the Warriors, allowed Pam Calder, Gemma McGlynn and Desi Calder to score.
In the top of the sixth, the Warriors decreased the margin by adding two runs, thanks to hits to Dennis and Jorgensen.
Three straight forward dismissals saw the Saints shut out in the bottom of the sixth and when the Warriors added a further three runs in the top of the seventh, the Saints had to bring in three runs if they were to score an upset win.
Kadison Hofert and Tessa McGlynn were a handy couple to start their quest and they both had outfield hits.
Hofert scored on McGlynn’s hit, but McGlynn was deftly thrown out at second by Belinda Siebert, to be the first out.
Two regulation outs saw the game finished in a narrow one run win to the Warriors.
The Warriors won’t take to the diamonds again until February next year, whilst the Saints will meet a red-hot Turvey Park in next Saturday’s fixture – the last round of competition before the Christmas break.
