Residents are being urged to steer clear of Lake Albert after recent tests revealed high levels of bacteria associated with faecal matter.

Wagga City Council issued an alert on Friday afternoon when high levels of enterococci, which is caused by faecal matter in the water, were detected.
The council’s manager of environment and city compliance Mark Gardiner warned residents against coming into contact with the lake until further notice.
“The community is advised against coming in contact or ingesting the water until the bacteria levels decrease,” Mr Gardiner said.
“Unlike blue green algae, enterococci isn’t visible so we please ask that residents pay attention to the advisory signage.”
Enterococci levels can rise after dry periods followed by an influx of water from rain and storms, which can introduce faeces from livestock, pets, and wildlife.
More testing is expected to take place on Monday.
