Dale Chand, 30, pleaded guilty to pocketing at least 20 articles of mail during his four-month tenure with Fast Freight, a Wagga courier company regularly contracted by Australia Post to collect mail from around the region.
In April, Australia Post received a number of very similar complaints – customers who had posted birthday cards containing cash and gift vouchers were claiming they never arrived.
They then planted five decoy cards on one of the Griffith man’s routes, all of which were missing after his shift.
When they confronted him, police found him concealing more than 20 stolen envelopes in a pillow case.
On Wednesday, Chand was sentenced to seven months’ jail to be served under supervision in the community.
He was also ordered to do 100 hours of community service work.
