Sutherland’s blistering start to the new season has him double the wins of his nearest opponent in the Southern District Racing Association (SDRA) trainer’s premiership.
Sutherland won the 2017-18 premiership with 30 winners and has already reached 22 this season with just under eight months still remaining.
Jerilderie trainer Phil Sweeney (11) and Wagga counterpart Gary Colvin (10) have both started the season strongly and sit in second and third place respectively.
Albury trainer Mitchell Beer (nine), the new kid on the block, sits in fourth.
Sutherland always maintained that the 2018-19 season would be a strong one for his stable and he is pleased to see it living up to expectations.
“It’s a good start, now we’ve got to try and keep it going,” Sutherland said.
“It’s come from a lot of hard work and placing horses in the right races because we were in a rebuilding phase there for about 18 months.
“I thought we were in for a pretty good year and we got off to a wonderful start. We have got a very good young team that will start to appear from January on. Our middle type horses have held their end up well.”
Meantime, Albury apprentice Blaike McDougall’s move to the region is paying off with him moving to the lead of the SDRA jockey’s premiership.
McDougall missed the first six weeks of the season with a fractured wrist but has ridden 19 winners in two and a half months.
The young gun sits three ahead of last year’s winner, Wagga’s Nick Heywood. Simon Miller is third.
