Eventual champions Boronia Park proved too strong in the semi-final of the Brian Taber Shield on Tuesday, but the young team recovered to down Kingscliffe for third place.
Coach Mark Crittenden was thrilled with the result.
“It was fantastic,” Crittenden said.
“At the start of the year, if you said we would have got third in the state we definitely would have taken that.
“All the boys were fantastic and enjoyed their time.”
Boronia Park set 135 for victory in the semi and despite Beau Edmunds and Alex Weightman both retiring when they reached 40, Lake Albert could only manage 4-110 from their 25 overs.
Boronia Park then went on to score a big win the the final.
It really franked Lake Albert’s form.
“They batted really well and we just couldn’t quite get there,” Crittenden said.
“Boronia were the state champions and won pretty convincingly so realistically that was the final.
“They bowled the other team out for 55 or something in the final so our boys really took it to them.”
The Wagga side then defended 105 in the playoff for third with Kingscliffe failing nine runs short.
Edmunds again retired when he reached 40 and also finished with 3-12 with the ball.
Liam Crittenden (2-6) and Jack Matheson (2-8) both bowled well.
It is a big week for the school with their girls softball team playing their PSSA semi-final on Thursday.
