At 9:26 am on Sunday morning, Turvey Park firefighters were called to the Bruce Street address to extinguish the flames inside the enclosed space.
Upon arrival, the two crews found the fire to be contained inside a bin.
Residents were evacuated briefly while crews worked to control the fire.
“It’s the main stairwell in the building, so it’s the main exit people had to use to get out of the building,” said a spokesperson at Turvey Park fire station.
“Some had to go right pass the fire, others had to climb over balconies, so it was pretty reckless.
“There wasn’t too much damage thankfully, but it could easily have been a lot worse.”
Police were also in attendance and will continue to investigate the incident, but it is so far believed the fire was deliberately lit.
Meanwhile, overnight fire crews have responded to yet another car fire.
At 2:30 on Monday morning, crews were called to Cottee Street, Ashmont to extinguish the latest in Wagga’s continued spate of vehicle blazes.
With few fluids to secure, crews took 10 minutes to control the fire.
The year’s total car fires is now tipping a hundred.
