In fact, with more than a month of 2018 remaining, Wagga Base Hospital’s maternity ward has already recorded more births than for the whole of last year.
By Tuesday morning, there had been 1065 births at Wagga Base in 2018, compared to 960 by the same time last year.
There were 14 sets of twins in that 1065 babies, and a couple of boys whose birth weights had the whole staff talking.
Three years ago, when the unit was still in the old hospital building, the birth rate was a much lower 800 or so a year.
With the hospital’s monthly birth rate now about 100 arrivals a month, the midwifery unit manager (MUM) Meagan Galvin, is fairly confident there will be arrivals on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
“We almost always do,” Ms Galvin said.
Already, midwives have 89 mums booked into the ward during December, with 100 expected in January.
April set a hospital record with 111 deliveries in a single month.
