Riverina police Superintendent Bob Noble said school leavers’ lives are only just beginning.
“It’s an exciting time for young people getting their academic studies finished...and going out to let their hair down, but there are a lot of risks associated with that,” he said.
“We’re very concerned about people and their behaviour behind the wheel and drinking and taking illicit substances.
“We just encourage young people not to embark on risky behaviour.
“Certainly encourage young people to keep an eye on their mates.”
NSW Schoolies runs from November 16 until December 3 this year.
Many school leavers have travelled to northern NSW, including Byron Bay, and southern parts of Queensland, including the Gold Coast.
Tweed-Byron Police District’s Detective Inspector Matt Kehoe said police were targeting drug and alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour.
“Police aren’t here to ruin your fun, but rather make it a safe environment for your celebrations,” Detective Inspector Kehoe said.
“Know your limits and look out for your mates so you can ensure this is a memorable event for the right reasons.
“Approach police or authorities if you are in danger or a victim of any type of crime.”
