A part of the NSW Government’s $431 million investment in the Wagga Health Service redevelopment, BreastScreen NSW will move from its current site in Calvary Health Care Riverina’s campus to Berry Street.
The work will be carried out by Richard Crookes Construction – the company also undertaking the Wagga Base Hospital stage three preliminary works – and is due to begin before the end of the year.
BreastScreen NSW director Debbie Lattimore said the highly visible presence of the centre in Berry Street is to motivate more women aged 50 to 74 to have a free – and potentially lifesaving – check-up.
“It’s important our breast screening service is easily accessible for women as screening mammograms save lives. Finding breast cancer early means less invasive treatment and a better chance of survival,” she said.
“The new premises will also see an extension of its current opening hours to Saturday mornings.”
The Development Application for the refurbishment of the Berry Street premises was approved by Wagga City Council in September.
The new BreastScreen NSW site in Berry Street will include:
- Dedicated reception and waiting areas
- Mammography and ultrasound rooms
- Consultation, procedure and interview rooms
- Call centre servicing local health districts
- Dedicated rear access disabled parking
- Storage facilities
Work on the fit-out of the Berry Street site is due to be completed in early 2019.
