The appointment was formally marked by an investiture ceremony today at Wagga Police Station.
Mr Grant, whose full-time role is head of college at St Martin’s College CSU, said he was “overwhelmed by the process”.
“[But] it’s a great honour to be a part of – this is a great town,” he said.
“I was invited into the police district by the commander, Superintendent [Bob] Noble.”
He said he looked forward to his role, which “is to basically go in and support the police with their very difficult roles out there in the streets dealing with a myriad of things”.
“It could be a counselling environment or spiritual,” he said.
“You could assist materially by finding out things and being able to assist them in whatever situation they find themselves in.
“Or you can simply listen to them, too.”
Superintendent Noble welcomed the appointment, saying Mr Bell brought with him “a broad depth and experience”.
“He’s got a strong background in policing... military, education and in pastoral care,” Superintendent Noble said.
“He’s got a very long history of working with big organisations and delivering pastoral care so we thought he was a natural fit.
“We’re lucky to get his services.”
Mr Bell is based at the Wagga Police Station and his services extend across the Riverina Police District.
