A car alight was quickly extinguished and the crews noticed a further fire on the corner of Tasman Road and Schiller Street in Gumly Gumly.
NSW Fire and Rescue station officer Justin Bentley said the crews found the second fire to be a b-double trailer full of hay that had been set alight.
“It appeared to be deliberately set and the crews got to work and called in further resources from Turvey Park Fire Station, Wagga Fire Station and Forest Hill RFS to assist with water supply,” Mr Bentley said.
“They spent a few hours up until around 6am this morning extinguishing the fire and bringing it under control and the hay is being spread apart to extinguish any hot spots so that it can be removed and taken away.
“It’s a shame because this was a good load of hay lost by the actions of somebody.”
Crews are still attending the scene and Schiller Street will remain closed until at least 11am while NSW Fire and Rescue clean up and monitor the debris for hot spots.
At this stage Wagga Police are not involved, but Mr Bentley said there is “no doubt” they will investigate the matter later on.
“None of the hay is salvageable, it’s all been wet and it’ll start to rot unfortunately,” Mr Bentley said.
It is still unknown of those involved in this apparent deliberate act, or who the car and trailer belonged to.
