A love of helping animals and, in turn, people, lead to Dr York Cheung finding the love of his life.
Before becoming a doctor Dr Cheung thought about becoming a vet as he loved looking after animals.
However, he soon found he had the same passion for looking after people and enjoyed it even more.
If he hadn’t decided to become a radiologist he may have never met his wife, Beth.
The pair met at work in Melbourne many years ago, moved to Wagga five years ago and are now expecting their second child.
The move to Wagga was triggered by opening the Imaging Associates practice.
Today, they work together with Beth working as a sonographer performing ultrasound scans.
Dr Cheung is a diagnostic and interventional radiologist and clinical director of Imaging Associates and Murrumbidgee Local Health District Medical Imaging, including Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.
“If you’ve ever had an x-ray or scan there, I may very well have reported it,” Dr Cheung said.
“As a radiologist, I diagnose and treat disease and injury through the use of medical imaging techniques such as x-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI.
“I love the challenge of piecing together anatomy, clinical details, and signs of disease to come up with the cause of a patient’s problems and potentially help make a real difference to their life.”
Dr Cheung’s sub-speciality area is interventional radiology.
“I perform minimally-invasive medical procedures through a pinhole in the skin, under the guidance of real-time x-rays,” he said.
“I’m constantly learning about diseases across all medical specialty areas and working with cutting edge technology that is evolving at an incredible pace.”
After working in the industry for years Dr Cheung still finds people have a misconception about image-guided injections and biopsies.
“Every day we see patients come in to Imaging Associates for image-guided procedures worrying that it will be a horribly painful ordeal,” he said.
“They are always so relieved afterwards, having found the whole experience so much more pleasant than expected.”
